So, you’re on the journey of moving yourself and your organisation away from X and other toxic platforms and towards alternative social media, but you want to do more to help this movement?

Take action as part of the EscapeX campaign!

Individuals!

• Follow EscapeX on Mastodon and EscapeX on Bluesky
• Post about this campaign with #EscapeX hashtag
• Think about organisations you have influence over – organisations you work for, organisations whose email newsletters you subscribe to, organisations you donate to, organisations you buy from, organisations you support through social media shares, politicians who represent you. Contact them by phone or email, share the link to the EscapeX website, ask them to take the steps below.
• When you get a request to share a petition on X or other toxic platforms, email the organisation and ask them to facilitate sharing on alternative social media. • If someone sends you a link to a post on X, have a look to see if you can find the same post on Mastodon or Bluesky and send a link back to them, asking them to share the content that way
• Avoid reading and scrolling through X. Get your news elsewhere or from alternative social networks. Uninstall the X app from your phone.
• Join OpenPortability – this benefits not only you personally, but helps build out networks on Mastodon and Bluesky
• Talk about the EscapeX campaign and alternative social media with your friends, family and community
• Leave a “goodbye” message on your X profile and other toxic social media profiles telling people where they can find you on alternative social media and with a link to the EscapeX website
• Print and distribute EscapeX flyers
• Are you in the European Union ?  Sign this petition to ask EU institutions to stop promoting X www.openpetition.eu/petition/online/an-open-letter-to-all-european-politicians-and-leaders-to-abandon-x-twitter  Not in the European Union ? Start a similar petition to your own leaders and share the petition with us so we can post it here !
• Do you have time or skills to offer our movement? Volunteer with us! (contact details in page footer)
• You could also donate money or volunteer your skills to help develop ethical social media platforms
  • the Pixelfed software development team is fund raising to develop ethical alternatives to Snapchat and Tiktok called Sups and Loops www.kickstarter.com/projects/pixelfed/pixelfed-foundation-2024-real-ethical-social-networks
  • Framasoft (not for profit, open source software developers) who have developed Fediverse platforms PeerTube (video) and Mobilizon (events), as well as other useful open source software (e.g. framagroupes for email groups) are fund raising to create a PeerTube smartphone app

Organisations!

• Set up organisation accounts on alternative social media such as   Mastodon, Bluesky,  Pixelfed (guide here)
• Use a PeerTube server instead of YouTube for sharing video content
• Put your alternative social media link icons on your website (guide here)
• Remove X icons from websites, email footers and printed materials
• If you are a campaign organisation which runs petitions, enable petition sharing on Mastodon and Bluesky (guide here, video guide https://spectra.video/w/bvextCR6Xeu1m953DxKMVL )
• These steps are particularly important for media organisations !

Remember, different people and organisations may be at different points in their journey. While many will not be ready for Step 3 below, you can ask them to do step 1 and step 2 !

• Step 1. Stop promoting X !
• Step 2. Stop letting X feed you !
• Step 3. Stop posting on X (when you are ready).
